********************************************************************** Media Pro 4000 Brief Date: February 7th 2001 File: PCMCIA_Partition_and_Format_BR020701.txt Module: PCMCIA Devices Title: PCMCIA Device Partitioning and Formatting ********************************************************************** 1) There is more than one way to partition, and format a PCMCIA ATA device, only one example is given here. a) Partitioning and Formatting should only be performed by PC/Windows technically competent personnel. b) Incorrect actions can result in a complete loss of data on the PC's Hard Drives and/or result in a completely inoperable PC. 2) The PC must have a properly configured, and operating PCMCIA Socket. a) The Socket Must be Supported in the Windows Device Manager. 3) Preparing to Partition or Format a) Insert a PCMCIA ATA Flash Drive, or PCMCIA ATA Hard Disk into a PCMCIA socket on the PC. b) In Windows 95/98 click on Start Menu, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager, Disk Drives, Generic IDE Disk Type 80. c) Note original settings before making any changes. d) Settings Tab 1) Int 13 unit will need to be selected in order to partition the device with FDISK. 2) Removable should also be selected. e) General Tab, check the Device Status, it should say "This device is working properly". f) Windows may require restarting after making changes before the changes are in effect. 4) Partitioning a) In Windows 95/98 click on Start Menu, Run on the open line type: FDISK click ok. b) If asked "do you wish to enable large disk support", select No. c) Pick option "5. Change current fixed disk drive". d) Select the disk that corresponds to your PCMCIA device. 1) ! DO NOT SELECT DISK 1, DRIVE C ! e) At the top of the window is will show which fixed disk is currently selected. 1) ! If "Current fixed disk drive: 1" is displayed, Hit the ESC key to exit FDISK and consult PC/Windows technically competent personnel ! a) ! Proceeding any further will likely result in permanently wiping out all data the hard drive and making your PC completely unusable ! f) Pick option "4. Display partition information" 1) If there is an existing partition listed, it will have to be removed in order to create a new partition. 2) An existing partition might look like: Partition Type MBytes System Usage D: 1 PRI DOS 210 FAT16 100% g) If an existing partition exists: Select option "3. Delete partition or Logical Drive". 1) Choose the correct option based on the previously displayed partition information. a) "1. Delete primary DOS Partition" b) "2. Delete Extended DOS Partition" c) "3. Delete Logical DOS Drives in the extended DOS Partition" d) "4. Delete Non-DOS Partition" 2) If there were Logical DOS drives in an extended DOS partition, they will need to be deleted before the Extended DOS partition can be removed. h) If there are no existing partitions: 1) Select option "1. Create DOS partition or Logical Drive". a) Select option "1. Create Primary DOS partition". 1) When asked "Do you wish to use the maximum available size for a primary DOS partition", select Yes. 2) After the partition is created, Hit the ESC key to continue. 3) Hit the ESC key to Exit FDISK. 4) A Message will probably appear: "You MUST restart you system for your changes to take effect. Any Drives you have created or changed must be formatted AFTER you restart. Shut down Windows before restarting." 5) Hit the ESC key to Exit FDISK. 6) In Windows 95/98 click on Start Menu, Shut Down, Shut Down the Computer, Yes i) Congratulations, you have either successfully partitioned the PCMCIA ATA Flash Drive, or PCMCIA ATA Hard Disk in your PCMCIA socket, or wiped all data on a hard drive. 5) Formatting a) In Windows 95/98 click on Start Menu, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt. b) At the DOS prompt type Format x /q 1) The /q stands for Quick Format. 2) Where X is the Drive letter assigned to your PCMCIA ATA Flash Drive, or PCMCIA ATA Hard Disk. 3) ! DO NOT FORMAT DRIVE C ! 4) If you can not figure out the drive letter for the PCMCIA ATA Flash Drive, or PCMCIA ATA Hard Disk. a) Hit the ESC key to clear the command line. b) Type EXIT on the command line and hit return, to exit to windows. c) ! Consult PC/Windows technically competent personnel ! d) ! Proceeding any further will likely result in permanently wiping out all data the hard drive and making your PC completely unusable ! c) A Message will probably appear: "WARNING, ALL DATA ON DISK DRIVE X: WILL be LOST! Proceed with Format (Y/N)" 1) If the drive letter is C: Hit No. a) Type EXIT on the command line and hit return, to exit to windows. b) ! Consult PC/Windows technically competent personnel ! c) ! Proceeding any further will likely result in permanently wiping out all data the hard drive and making your PC completely unusable ! 2) If the drive letter is the drive letter of the PCMCIA ATA Flash Drive, or PCMCIA ATA Hard Disk, Hit Yes. 3) If a Message appears "Invalid existing format. This disk can not by QuickFormatted. Proceed with unconditional Format (Y/N)?" a) Select Yes 4) A Message will be displayed while the drive is formatted "Formatting ###.##M, ###% percent completed." 5) When Prompted for a Volume Label Hit Enter Only. 6) Type EXIT on the command line and hit return, to exit to windows. 7) In Windows 95/98 click on Start Menu, Shut Down, Shut Down the Computer, Yes d) Congratulations, you have either successfully formatted the PCMCIA ATA Flash Drive, or PCMCIA ATA Hard Disk in your PCMCIA socket, or wiped all data on a hard drive. e) 16 bit "Microsoft" type DOS File Allocation Table 1) Typically drives smaller than 16MB will use 12 bit DOS FAT, or can not be made to use 16 bit DOS FAT. a) DOS FAT 12 should be avoided due to compatibility problems. 2) Some drives larger than 850MB will use 32 bit DOS FAT, or can not be made to use 16 bit DOS FAT. a) DOS FAT 32 should be avoided due to compatibility problems. 3) Typically drives larger than 4GB will require 32 bit DOS FAT, and can not be made to use 16 bit DOS FAT. a) DOS FAT 32 should be avoided due to compatibility problems. 6) The PCMCIA ATA Flash Drive, or PCMCIA ATA Hard Disk should now be ready for use. 7) See Also a) PCMCIA Devices for DSM & LCM Brief b) LCM-4020 Manual c) DSM-4020 Manual ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Specifications subject to change at any time.
